Stéphane Marchand-Maillet studied Applied Mathematics in Chambéry, Grenoble and London, where he obtained a PhD in Applied Mathematics and Operational Research from Imperial College (University of London) in 1997. He completed a postdoctoral stay at the public-private Telecommunications Research Institute EURECOM (Sophia-Antipolis, France). At the end of 1999, he joined the University as part of the submission of the NCCR IM2 (Interactive Multimodal Information Management) which was accepted and extended over 3 phases from 2001 to 2013 under the supervision of Prof. Hervé Bourlard (Idiap, Martigny). Stéphane Marchand-Maillet has been leading the research group "Machine Learning, Data Mining and Information Retrieval (Viper)" in the Department of Computer Science of the Faculty of Science since 2000. He works on the analysis, modeling and indexing of high-dimensional data spaces. His team is particularly interested in data from Medicine (flow cytometry, imaging, patient records, etc.) in collaboration with the HUG. He is also active in Digital Humanities projects, including currently co-directing the project "A semantic and multilingual online edition of the registers of the Council of Geneva (1545-1550)" in collaboration with the Fondation de l'Encyclopédie de Genève, based at the CUI and funded by the SNF. He also has a particular interest in teaching topics related to Artificial Intelligence and Statistical Learning.
Appointed MER in 2003, he became Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science in 2011. He is also Vice-President for the University of Geneva of the Foundation Board of the Idiap Research Institute, Martigny.
